If you are one of the many who prefers sleeping on one side of their bed exclusively, you might be shocked to learn that researchers believe this choice could reveal aspects of your personality. A study by Premier Inn suggests left-side sleepers wake up happier than right-side ones!

1. They’re more left-brained

Studies and TikTok videos conducted by Premier Inn have demonstrated how your mood and approach to work may depend on which side of the bed you sleep on. One such research project revealed that right-side sleeping individuals woke up more grumpily than left-side sleepers, with only 18% admitting they liked their job in comparison to 31% who loved theirs on average compared with just 18% who disliked their position on average.

Healthline reports that when sleeping on the left side of the bed, your brain’s glymphatic system – which cleans it out during the nighttime – becomes 90 percent more active, cleaning away waste proteins that have built up during the day and clogged tiny interstitial spaces in your mind. This cleaning process removes these proteins while you sleep soundly on your pillowtop mattress.

Premier Inn conducted a survey revealing that people who sleep on the left side of their beds tend to be happier and more optimistic, better equipped to tackle difficult workloads and stressful situations. Furthermore, two-thirds of them stated they could remain calm during emergencies than their partners.

2. They’re more confident

Sleeping on either side of your bed might seem trivial, but it has an enormously positive effect on daily life, according to research conducted by budget hotel chain Premier Inn. Their study revealed that people who sleep on the left feel more positive about life than those sleeping on the right.

It could be for various reasons; perhaps you prefer sleeping closer to your partner, preferring less noise and light, or it might simply be habit. Whatever it may be, almost everyone has one side of the bed they prefer sleeping on, making it challenging for couples who start sharing rooms to quickly switch sides when sleeping arrangements change.

According to studies, those sleeping on their left-side have been claimed to be much happier and better at handling stress than right-side sleeping individuals. And even if this turns out to be just another bunch of mythology, why not make an effort in the morning to be as positive as possible?

3. They’re happier at work

Two-thirds of left-side sleepers report feeling calmer in a crisis than right-side sleepers, suggesting the science behind sleeping position may be more intriguing than anticipated! Yet according to Simba’s survey of 2,000 couples, 10 per cent argued over which side of bed they sleep on – likely accounting for why almost half of British couples refuse to swap places on bed together.

4. They’re more relaxed

Selecting which side of the bed to sleep on may seem like a simple matter of preference or necessity, whether that means being close to an emergency exit or preferring one close to your en suite – among many other reasons. But according to new research conducted by OnePoll for UK mattress technology company Slumber Cloud on 2,000 employed adults surveyed across 24 different occupations — your sleeping side selection can reveal more than you realize about yourself.

Sleeping on the left side of the bed appears to help people be happier and have a more positive outlook when they wake up, which can help them take on heavy workloads more confidently while remaining calm in times of crisis. One in ten right-side sleepers even reported they hate their job while lefties were much more optimistic regarding their employment prospects.

5. They’re more creative

According to research, people who sleep on their left sides are generally happier and more upbeat than those sleeping on the right. This may help them cope better with heavy workloads and stressors. Furthermore, they appear more confident in their jobs; one third of “lefties” compared to 18 per cent of “righties”.

Simba, the UK sleep technology mattress company, conducted a study which suggested lefties are more creative than righties due to how our brain is wired differently: while creative thought occurs on one side of our minds, logic and impulse are controlled on the other.

Sleeping on one side or the other of your bed should come down more to practical considerations than personal ones; being closer to a radiator, further away from an en suite bathroom, or with a great TV view are all legitimate reasons for selecting certain sides of the bed.
